Artist Influence: Adrienne Salinger
This project is
a very literal interpretation of Adrienne Salinger’s At Home collection along
with her Teenager collection, because it show’s people in their spaces that
represent their personalities. I kept with her theme of the ‘natural’
backgrounds, colors, and wardrobes. I did not make any requests about what they
are wearing; they are just wearing what they would normally have on. Most of
them did not have very much warning before I came so they did not have time to
clean up or change their environment.
The color palate depended on
each person. It is one of the many aspects of the photographs that show the
unique personality of that person. Some of them have very vibrant colors that
are part of their personalities, while others have very mute colors or a
majority of blacks and grays. Some of the rooms are ones that they have had
years to make their own while others have only been in them for less than a
year, but each one still brings out aspects of who each subject is. None of the
rooms show everything about the subject but they do represent a large portion
of their personalities.
I chose not to do the same room
for each subject because each person was represented best by a different space
of their homes. Some of them lived with other people, so the best
representation of them ended up being their rooms. However, a few of them owned
their homes so it was just a matter of choosing which one of their rooms was
the most interesting and would show their personalities best. One was a garage
because that is where his hobbies were stored and expressed where he likes to
spend his time. Another was a living room that was made uniquely to her taste
and favorite things. However, most of them were rooms, because it is a space
that people usually feel most comfortable to create as their own.
I really enjoyed your project and the use of peoples rooms, framing and color to represent your subject. It is commendable to be able to do a portrait of some one and the surroundings are able to speak to their individuality just as much as them being in the picture. Each of your images seem very strong to me. My favorites though is the Batman one and the man in his garage. The expressions of all your subjects are very natural and allow the room to express for them making it less of a backdrop and more of an extension of them. Our rooms say more about us then i had originally thought and these pictures are making me rethink my own decor choices. profoundly impactful and motivating.
ReplyDeleteThese photographs give a great amount of depth to your subjects and their surroundings. This would have been such a difficult project for anyone to do because of the difficulty in making everyday people and their surroundings pop out. You had such a fluid theme from picture to picture but very different settings and people, which makes them so successful. I think thy are also suburb because of the fact that if a random person would view these they would know the exact message that you are portraying through these images. Your color choice is also amazing and the choice of lighting that you used in each photograph complements your subjects and their surroundings. You pulled this off wonderfully.
