Demi Hanes

Sugar Skulls are an iconic cultural image and each portray their own beauty. Each person also portrays their own beauty and personality in everything they do. For this assignment I combined the two showing the unique beauty in each person painted with their own unique Sugar Skull face. Making the photos all black and white gives them a sense of unity but maintains the unique beauty of each person.

  1. I love how much attention you payed to the detail of lighting in all of your pictures. They resemble classic portraiture but you gave it a your own unique spin on it by using sugar skulls. I truly believed you captured the beauty of the paint but also the beauty of each individual you photographed. The choice of black and white is also effective because you give each subject emphasis on beauty rather than taking away from this by using color and making the paint stand out. I absolutely think you did a wonderful job.

  2. i think that use of lighting in these portraits was done very well. Not only on the faces but also the background. In the second to the last picture the shadows of the wrinkles in the background create a diagonals leading to her face. Also in each picture the lighting is a different which gives the pictures good variety.

  3. This reminds me of something Oscar Lozoya would do. He has some work that is similar but yours definitely feels more relatable. As far as execution, your lighting is very interesting, and the quality of the expressions on the subjects is great. All of them look very comfortable behind the camera and comfortable with you shooting them. You put a ton of work into this by have differently subjects and painting each ones face. It looks as though you put time, thought and dedication into this assignment. Killer shots!
