Steven Russell

This work is an attempt to capture the emotions surrounding abortions.  I wanted to show in a very non-in your face way how I feel about the topic of abortion.  I wanted to not show the wrongs or the pains but rather the choice.  This work was not an attempt or place of judgement but a place for prevention and even healing.  I tried to have my beliefs in Christ come through in my work.  This is a sensitive topic and I tried to do it in a very sensitive way.  Enjoy!

  1. The settings you chose for this collection is absolutely awesome. The subject matter would have been hard to figure out if you didn't explain but after you did I found these images very successful. My favorite ones are the last two. You took a breath taking picture of Albuquerque from the crest and another absolutely awesome picture of the sunset. I believe your last image is successful because the human form almost looks like it is paying homage to life and nature.

  2. I can feel kind of holy things in your pictures. Especially, I love second and third pictures! The pregnant women and nature are very harmorious. and the last picture, it is also amazing! I can feel God's existence who creates human being and nature in your pictures.

  3. I like how, despite the message against abortion, you show that keeping a baby isn't that easy, it's a hard decision and you can still feel alone and sad/confused about it. I think that's really important especially with all the media and politics happening around it today. The usual assumption is that you're sad if you have an abortion, and happy if you don't. And it's just not that Black and white.
    Thank you!

  4. This set tells a beautiful story that I believe we all can relate to. Even though most of us aren't parents or haven't been pregnant, we were all born and can appreciate the beautiful gift that life is. I particularly enjoyed the final shot with the arms raised in the air. Two arms in the air is the universal sign of surrender. I really grabbed onto that notion with this being the final shot of the collection. After all the struggles and suspense that a pregnancy brings, the symbolic act of surrender seemed like a perfect fit to end the set with. I saw it as the surrender of one life for the life of the child's. Surrendering your wants and needs for the better well being of the human being you brought into this world! Very moving good sir!
