Kara Crookston: Creative Assignment 1

I wanted to create classic portraits for my family members. I wanted to convey expressions I see when am at home with my family, rather than "mask-like" expressions we all wear around strangers.  I want to explore emotion another project, because I enjoyed capturing happiness, trust, and familiarity in photographs. :)

  1. I really like your choice of using a black background for all of them. I think that in contrast with the different color scheme in the photos they were all tied together very nicely. Personally I love your photography because it is so simple yet warm. Your lighting on each person was significantly different from photo to photo but I really like this aspect. Keep it up!

  2. I thought it was interesting how you tried to use natural light for a lot of them because it really looks like you were in a studio with the black back ground. I really like the portrait of your dad and it would be cool if some of the others "popped" like that as well. You really captured their personality which is cool.

  3. Hey Kara, great job on these photos. I really like the simplicity of the background and the consistency in the framing of your subjects. I think that the different colors that each family member is wearing really sets them apart as individual members of your family with different interests. If I did not already know your family, I think these photos would have given me a pretty good feel for the personalities of your loving family members and their interests. I think you did pretty well with the lighting, however, some of the photos, in my opinion, may have looked better with a little extra light. I like your self portrait as well as the second photo of your youngest sister, "Lizbet," the best. I think they are perfectly lit and look fabulous! Keep up the good work!
