Heather Kelly

In my series I used self-portraits in order to focus on body image and to capture feelings of awkwardness and low self-esteem. I utilized a minimalistic wardrobe and monochromatic palette to keep my photographs simplistic, paired with plain backgrounds and in some cases a shallow depth of field to emphasize the subject of each image. I chose not to include faces in any of my portraits, depersonalizing the subject while also keeping them almost uncomfortably intimate.

  1. Dude! I love your work so much! I really appreciate the abstract yet clean cropping of your images. Your choice of black and white was very dramatic and symbolic. I really enjoyed looking at your work! The feel for me could have gone a couple ways because of the "intimacy" of them. Good Job!

  2. I love the idea behind these pictures. Body image is something that everyone can relate to. Choosing to be your own model was also very brave because you are drawing focus to parts of your body that you may personally struggle with or that others struggle with. The simplicity of them makes them truly powerful. The only things I would change is the two that are the same position but from different angles and the last one with the different colored background. Those two similar images are both strong but I see them as very similar and think your collection would benefit from adding another image to give it more diversity. I also believe keeping the background the same in them all just makes them that much stronger.

  3. Heather, I am slightly obsessed with these photos. When I first saw them I never would have known that they mean what they do because they are so gorgeous. The detail in your blacks is practically flawless and the idea behind the photos is haunting but speaks volumes. The fact that you chose to focus on body image and self esteem issues and modeled for it yourself is extremely brave and I think you did an amazing job!

  4. I loved this collection! Coming from a personal background where my sister struggled with an loss of identity and sever self esteem issues, these photos really captivated me. My favorite shots of the piece are the ones where the hands are covering the face. This simple action captures the mindset that someone struggling with this is often in. A place of shame and isolation that often times is unfound in anything legitimate. The black and white also allowed for a beautiful contrast and contradiction that this type of struggle often is. Great work!

  5. I feel like these photos can relate to any person male or female. The feeling of not being comfortable with ones body and self. Its just a series that anyone can relate to. The order of the images also brings a lot to the series giving a personal feel of you to the viewer. I think you should keep with this and expand your series for your personal portfolio!
